My Life in China (#11): Learning to Dance

When I was an undergraduate student, social dancing was still a foreign concept.

We did learn a bit of line dancing where everyone was dancing to the music without touching each other. We lined up like in the army and we danced to music that sounded like what you would normally hear at the track and field event

When I began my graduate studies, life started getting interesting. I noticed that there were couples dancing. Someone even approached me to teach me. I was flattered!

He was a Master's student in Chemistry Department but he knew how to dance. He even had his own bike which was a luxury at that time. Before I knew it, we were dating. A few years later, we even got married...for 13 years, with two wonderful children.

We danced together at various school events, including two New Year's Eve celebrations. We were even invited to teach other people how to dance.

I remember after graduation, once we took the bus to Qing Hua University for a New Year's Eve dance party. On the way there, the bus tickets were only .60 cent (Yuan) for two people, on the way back, the price doubled, it became 1.20 (= 0.23 Canadian Dollar).

My interest in dancing continued all the way into Canada.

When I lived in Toronto. I used to drive 30 km for a night of dancing. When I was separated, I would go dancing when the kids were with their father (yes, the same person who taught me how to dance), sometimes I even ran into him (guess he found a babysitter) but we danced separate dances...
