I had been a student all my life till the time I graduated from Shandong University with a Master's degree.
I could have worked in the university. My parents would be happier as I would be in the same city where my brother lived and not far from where my parents lived.
I was dating. One day my boyfriend told me that he had secured a job in the capital and the distance might jeopardize our relationship. I wasn't ready for a breakup, so I said, "I will go to Beijing to find a job."
My mom wasn't enthusiastic. Her words: "What made you think that you can get your residency in Beijing? Local students may not even be able to stay after graduation". That was true but I had already made my mind. I didn't talk back but I was scared.
I started my solo one-week job hunting in Beijing.
I visited about twenty publishing agencies in a week. One day I was recommended to check out Democratic League Central Office (民盟中央) located not far from that publishing agency.
Guess what, they were hiring. I chatted with the boss and an HR person for a good half hour. I didn't talk much. I had a cold and I could barely make myself heard. The boss told the HR person that I reminded him of his daughter somehow.
A few weeks later, I received the job offer, earlier than my boyfriend received his.
I worked there from 1988 until May 1997 when I came to Canada and started a new chapter...
Two photos are from the office and one in front of the office building.
