"There are nine million bicycles in Beijing/That's a fact/It's a thing we can't deny/Like the fact that I will love you till I die"
That was from a beautiful song called Nine Million Bicycles In Beijing.
I was mesmerized by the creativity of the video.
When I lived in Beijing more than 30 years ago, bicycle was my mode of my transportation,
I biked to go almost everywhere in the big city of Beijing, even when I was very pregnant.
After my daughter was turned into 1, putting her on the back of my bike became my mode of transporting her to where she needed to be: daycare first, then kindergarden.
I didn't live very far from my work and her daycare. It was raining one day so I decided to use the bus instead. Oh, boy, what a mistake! The bus was so crowded, we were almost crushed into pictures if we stayed five minutes longer. During lunch time, I went back and got my bicycle out. Getting wet a bit felt a lot better than getting squeezed into a pie.
Another time, I picked up my daughter and another mom picked up her son. We left at the same time and got entertained by the two little kids' chitchat. They were both sitting at the back of our bikes. My daughter pointed to the traffic cones on the street and made a connection with Chairman Mao, how he used that as tools to clean up the streets everywhere in China. My daughter made that bold statement while the little boy was totally on board with her. It was hilarious...
