Connecting through Technology

Updated: Dec 10, 2020

Do you use Zoom, Wechat, Facebook a lot these days?

Are you happy that technology can connect you with people from anywhere in the world?

I delivered my third Ice Breaker this Tuesday. I invited a few to cheer me on.

Seven people showed up: three are past McGill members, three are Chinese, plus one of my mentors.

Thank YOU all for making me feel so special.

When I did my first Ice Breaker in 2003, there were also seven people who showed up for me, including my teenage daughter.

I received a Spark Plug Certificate that night. This Tuesday, I would get 49 points for bringing in 7 guests with our Recognition Program.

Amazing, wasn't it? What is more amazing is that I reconnected with a gentleman from Toronto who was at my first Ice Breaker in 2003. I used to go to his dance parties on Saturdays when I lived in Toronto. He and his wife joined us. He is running for a city councilor. Go, Wu Yong, I am so proud of YOU.

One of the three past TM members, Marzieh joined us from Michigan and she took the challenging role of Grammarian last minute but she performed it with audacity and grace. I always admire her.

My mentor not only joined us to see me in action, but he also allowed me to "use" our dialogue as an attention grabber. It worked.

I am truly a blessed Toastmaster. I am grateful for having met so many talented people and even made some wonderful friends.

I know it is better to meet in person but meeting virtually is better than nothing at all these days, don't you agree?
