A Few Sushi Stories

Updated: Mar 30, 2021

I love Sushi, so do my kids, especially my son.

The cover photo was from a potluck party hosted at my home in Spring 2009. One friend promised to bring self-made Sushi. My then 11 years old had been asking about that friend when other people started arriving. When she finally arrived, the variety and the presentation of the Sushi impressed us all. Everyone wanted to have a picture with the Sushi. My son asked me quietly on the side: "Can I have them all to myself after the pictures? It is your party!"

Going to All You Can Eat Sushi restaurants is his all-time favorite. There were some lessons though. One time, he and his friends ordered more on the table than they could chew. They had to make room in the washroom to avoid the penalty of unconsumed food. After that, he couldn't stand hearing the word "Sushi"...for days.

I did make Sushi occasionally as well, just not that fancy. My son once said to his friends "My mom makes the best Sushi in the world". Well, that was probably before my friend brought that Sushi sensation to my party.

When my daughter lived in the dorm at McGill, I used to drop off some freshly made Sushi from that morning on my way to work. One day I offered her the same but she declined. A few hours later, I got a text from her "Can I please have the Sushi you made? I could have them for dinner" I replied, "Sorry, honey. I offered them to a colleague who didn't bring lunch."

What is your favorite food?
