Travel Talk: Cuba - My FIRST Winter Escape

Updated: Aug 30, 2020

Winter in Montreal can be very bitter sometimes. When I lived in Montreal, my work was a bit over 3 km away. I used Bixi to bike to work in the summer and I walked to work in the winter when the weather wasn't that harsh, meaning, minus 15 and above. It was a good 40 minutes walk. When the weather got tougher, I took my BMW instead: bus, metro, and walk.

February 2015 was very cold because I bought a weekly metro pass for the first three weeks in a row. If I had bought another one, the monthly pass would have cost less, so I bought a plane ticket instead, together with my friend Jin.

We spent a week of sunshine on an island called Cayo Santa Maria in Cuba, That was my first winter escape.

It was a week of paradise, in the midst of a perfect storm (see attached article for details).

The weather was impeccable. The food was delicious. We played cards sipping away Lazy Pina Colada while piano music was playing in the background.

The highlight was our daily fresh coconut, straight from the tree taken down by garden workers.

The housekeeper kept our room tidy and clean. To show appreciation, we left some souvenirs including clothes on the bed near the end of our trip. Our little souvenirs were well received, more than what we expected, it came with a heartfelt thank YOU note in English that filled our hearts with joy.

My first winter escape was just like that.
