Music to My Ears

Updated: Mar 30, 2021

A few weeks ago, I wrote about Music Idioms and I mentioned that Music to my Ear is one of my favorites.

It means something that is pleasant or gratifying to hear or discover.

Writing this entry with the instrumental Christmas music playing softly in the background brings such joy to my heart.

I love listening to music but I don't play any instrument.

On the other hand, my children, especially my son, taught himself to play the keyboard, piano, and guitar. He is the musician in the family. He earned himself a full scholarship in college with his Saxophone talent.

I remember at the parent/teacher interview, his music teacher suggested that I should enroll him in private lessons because Eric is "VERY talented". I remember asking her, "how many of your students would you call "VERY talented?". Her answer surprised me: "two, your son and another girl called Grace." I did take her advice and I enrolled him in private lessons for quite a few years. He excelled.

What comforts me is that when I had the videocall with my kids the other day, I noticed that my son has laid all three instruments on display. What is more comforting is that he does play the keyboard, the guitar, and the saxophone from time to time. My daughter has set up a big dance studio at home and I am hoping to receive a video of her dance practice soon.

Studies show that playing an instrument reduces stress, cultivates creativity, and uses almost every part of the brain...

Do you play an instrument?
