I started working for the government on April 8, 2021.
Almost two years have passed.
Yesterday was the FIRST day that I worked in an office.
I have been teleworking (working remotely) since the very beginning.
The new policy says we have to work onsite 2 to 3 days a week from this week.
As public servants, we have to follow the guidelines, don't we?
I am glad that I don't have to go to Ottawa to carry out my work, there is an office here in downtown Montreal. That is why I took the offer from SSC and declined the other one from DFO in the first place: simply because of the fact of having an office located in the same city where I live.
I am ok with even working five days if that is the case.
The only thing is not about traveling it is about colleagues.
It makes sense if you can meet your colleagues in person when you go into an office, right?
Someone from another team booked the station for me so I thought that I would meet a few people yesterday. Well, I was the only one who showed up.
There were other people in a bigger room but I didn't join them.
I was lazy after I cleaned up everything at my workstation. I didn't want to move.
Unfortunately, my desk was next to a server room so there was constant noise.
The good news is, I could listen to music all day long without using headphones.
There was nobody around. Except for some people in that bigger room, I saw only a handful of people, say, not more than five.
I also enjoyed my walk during my lunch break.
I didn't walk to work and home all the way as planned due to my bags. When I arrived home in the evening, with an empty lunch bag and water bottle, my bag still weighed 10 lb.
I had a quiet dinner in China Town as I could not find anyone to join me.
I will know better for next time: what to pack/not to pack and I can request to have a locker so I can leave a pair of shoes or two.
I also hope to meet/talk with a few people next time.
The image below shows my desk and the view from the office. The top left and bottom right were taken at the same place, except the latter was taken 16 years ago (December 2, 2007)!
Do you have any recollection of this, Eric?
